Design, synthesis, and structural characterization of new polymeric substances and their evaluation in controlled drug release

The present research theme has been developed on the basis of the observation that a benzofulvene derivative (BF1) was found to polymerize spontaneously to afford a polymer showing outstanding features. In this context, a large series of benzofulvene derivatives has been prepared in our laboratories in order to define the role of the substituents in the polymerization process and in the polymer characteristics. The insertion of PEG side chains has led to the preparation of polymeric materials showing intriguing features, from the point of view of their potential use in the development of drug delivery systems.
