Design and synthesis of arylpiperazine derivatives related to quipazine and characterization of their interaction with 5-HT3 receptors

The development  of arylpiperazine derivatives related to quipazine constitutes a research theme, which is active in our laboratories since  90’s and it has led to outstanding results. The most significant achievements include: (a) the discovery of subnanomolar affinity ligands showing high selectivity and different intrinsic efficacy; (b) the design and synthesis of bivalent ligands capable of interacting with 5-HT3 receptors and with acetylcholinesterase or with a synthetic receptor on the surface of a dendrimer (development of multivalent supramolecular drugs); (c) development of an interaction model of 5-HT3 receptors with arylpiperazine ligands.
