Welcome day for PhD students, organized by the Italian Association of PhD Candidates and PhD Holders (ADI)
The workshop “The Advanced Crystallographic Software for Structural Analysis” will be held at the Department of Biotechnology, Chemistry and Pharmacy of the University of Siena.
During the three days, the program will include lectures, practical exercises, and discussions focused on the advanced use of major crystallographic software. Experts in the field, including a representative from the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre (CCDC), will take part in the event.
The initiative is aimed primarily at PhD candidates, recent PhD graduates, and early-career researchers, but it is open to the entire university community. The program combines key principles of academic writing and presenting in English with innovative content on the use of Large Language Models (LLMs)—including DeepSeek, NotebookLM, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Copilot—as tools to support writing and research, outlining their advantages, strategies for effective use, and major limitations.
The sessions will provide practical tools for prompt engineering (such as negative prompting and meta-prompting) and critical thinking, useful both for effective drafting and for an informed evaluation of the outputs produced by generative language models.
Location: Polo Didattico Mattioli, Aula Carlini
Schedule:
- 20 November, 16:00–18:00: Writing Skills, and the Pros and Cons of LLMs
- 21 November, 11:00–13:00: Using LLMs to Co-create Titles, Abstracts, Introductions, and Discussions
The event is part of the soft-skills training program for PhD students and carries 1 ECTS credit, also valid for PhD candidates enrolled at universities other than UniSI.
Activities will take place mainly in person, with the possibility of online participation for those unable to attend on site, upon justified request.
Registration is required (free of charge):
